Q. Waivers?
A. To waive assessment, assessment recommendations or orientation, see a counselor for a waiver form.
 
Q. What subject areas are assessed?
A. English, English as a Second Language, Math and Reading are assessed in group sessions.
 
Q. Is there a fee for assessment?
A. There is no fee for assessment.
 
Q. Do I need to make a reservation for testing?
A. No, just make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the published test time as space is limited and late-comers will not be admitted after testing has started.
 
Q. Do I need to take assessments if I have taken equivalent courses from another accredited college or university?
A. No, except for ESL. You must bring proof (official or unofficial transcript) of successful course completion (C or better) to the Assessment Office.
 
Q. Can I use my assessment or placement from another accredited college or university?
A. Only placement results from other California Community Colleges can be reviewed. You must bring proof of equivalent testing or placements to the Assessment Office. ESL results are only accepted from Mission College.
 
Q. What do I need to bring to the Testing Session?
A. You need to bring
a) your WVC photo ID with your College ID number
b)Also bring two #2 pencils with erasers and 12 quarters for parking.
 
Q. Can I enroll in a class without either completing the prerequisite or taking the appropriate assessment?
A. Yes, you may challenge the prerequisite if any of the following reasons apply to you:
1) the prerequisite course is not available in the current term;
2) you have the knowledge or ability to succeed in the course despite not meeting the stated prerequisite;
3) you believe that the prerequisite is not necessary for success in the course; or
4) you believe that the prerequisite is being applied in a discriminatory manner. To challenge a prerequisite, see the Admissions Office, Assessment Office, or Counseling Services counter. To waive the assessment process, see an academic counselor.
 
Q. How do I know if I should take the English or English as a Second Language assessment?
A. Students who do not speak English as their native language should plan to take the ESL placement test. English may be considered your native language if you received your elementary and secondary school education in English.
 
Q. Can I retake the assessments to change my placement?
A. You may not retake the English assessment. A student may retake ESL assessments after one year. You may retake Math placement one time. See a counselor if you want to waive the placement recommendation.
 
Q. How long are my scores valid?
A. Assessments do not expire. However, you can see a counselor to challenge a prerequisite or waive the assessment recommendation if you believe your assessments are not accurate or appropriate.
 
Q. I have a disability. Can I get special testing accommodations?
A. Yes. First, contact DESP at (408) 741-2453 to request disability-related accommodations.
