Program Information
Apparel manufacturing is the fourth largest manufacturing industry in the United States. Apparel is produced in every country in the world. The career options for individuals interested in an apparel manufacturing career are endless. This certificate prepares individuals to perform a variety of entry level positions in many areas of apparel production. Individuals interested in careers in apparel manufacturing must have a thorough knowledge of design development, design engineering and manufacturing methods. Knowledge of apparel construction, the capabilities and limitations of production equipment, the principles of pattern making and apparel production are essential. Assistants in the production area mush have sound understanding of fabric construction and behavior. Because jobs in this are varied, individuals must be flexible, be able to work as a team as well as individually with little supervision. Good communication skills, both verbal and written are essential. Apparel production workers represent many nationalities. The ability to speak Chinese or other Asian languages or Spanish is an asset. An appreciation of cultural diversity is essential.
Most apparel firms now use computers for some, if not all, steps in the design and manufacturing process. Computer literacy is required; experience with data entry, word processing and spread sheets is a basic requirement of most jobs. The ability to produce flat sketches and specification drawings using a computer is beneficial.

The San Francisco bay area is the third largest apparel producing region in the United States. Hundreds of apparel manufacturers, suppliers and related businesses provide many opportunities for employment in the industry. Entry level positions for individuals earning an Apparel Manufacturing Certificate include:
