Community Education is a flexible, responsive arm of the College, created to identify new programs and respond to needs unmet by existing, traditional credit programs. It has the freedom to hire consultants with revenue it produces from fee-supported classes in order to identify new needs and initiate programs to meet them. It also administers programs eligible for State-support, such as Classes for Older Adults.


With more than 11,000 students registering for classes each year, Community Education provides a high level of visibility for the Colleges in the community and serves to introduce the College to new potential students through its programs. These programs generate about $1,000,000 per year in fee income, and more than $500,000 in State support, paying all costs of the operation.


Some of the variety in Community Education programs are represented in the list below:

Adolescent and Adult Drug Abuse Education Programs: In separate programs, youth referred by schools, probation departments, and courts can get a grip on their lives through education. Adults, who are also referred, go through longer programs of education and counseling to help them cope with drug and alcohol related issues.

College for Kids:  A summer program that offers two 3-week sessions, five days per week, 8:30 am - 2:00 pm, for 6th to 9th graders. Selected instructors from neighboring schools teach subjects including math, science, sports, art, computers, and study skills.
