WVC HOMECOMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Common Questions & Answers
Q. If Mission and West Valley College are in the same district, will the grades for my classes from either college be applied to my grade point average and appear on my transcript?
A. Yes, grades from both colleges are calculated as part of your cumulative (overall) grade point average and will appear on your transcript.
Q. I last attended West Valley College a few years ago, and I want to return to obtain my degree. Will I lose any or all of my past college units?
A. No, College units remain a part of your record forever and any new units are added to that record. However, you need to check with a counselor because you may have lost your catalog rights, so you would have to take any new graduation requirements.
Q. Will classes taken in the past either at another college still apply toward a degree or certificate?
A. Yes, but you need to turn in an official transcript to the counseling front desk (located in the counseling building) and ask for it to be evaluated. Once it is evaluated, you need to make an appointment with a counselor to review the results of the evaluation.
Q. I tried to register for a class but was unable to because the system stated that I had not completed the pre-requisite. Since I completed the pre-requisite course at another college, how do I get the system to recognize my completion of that class?
A. You must submit an unofficial copy of your college transcript to the ASSESSMENT CENTER (located in the counseling building), or a copy of your report card, or an internet copy which includes the grade for this prerequisite course. The Assessment staff will enter the completed prerequisite(s) into the system so that you will be able to register.
Q. I am attempting to register for a course but missed the assessment test. I am currently a student at another college and am eligible for a similar course. Is there a way to transfer the test results to WVC so that I can enroll for the upcoming semester?
A. You can not transfer the assessment score. However, if the score provided you with eligibility for a specific class at your current college, the WVC assessment office can evaluate your eligibility here based on the class you are eligible for at your current college.
Q. Do I have to take Library 4 to graduate?
A. If you want to obtain an AA or AS and you began taking courses in Fall 2005, or later, you must take Library 4 to graduate.
Q. What is an information competency infused class?
A. An information competency infused class is a class that uses essential techniques for finding, evaluating and analyzing information using electronic resources for academic research. Students who began to take courses at WVC in Fall 2007, or later need to also take an information competency infused class in order to obtain an AA or AS. A listing of infused courses is in the schedule of classes.
Q. I received a dismissal letter. Does that mean I can’t come to college anymore?
A. No, it means you need to make an appointment to see a counselor to discuss your academic progress and determine what can be done to help you achieve your academic goals.
Q. I already have a BA, but now I want to get an AA in another area. Do I have to take all of the general education (GE) courses again since I haven’t been in school for 20 years?
A. No, the BA will fulfill all GE requirements for an AA or AS degree. However, you must provide the counseling office with an official transcript so that it can be evaluated.
