Academic ESL: Advanced Level

Certificate of Competency

This program provides instruction in English that focuses on helping ESL students improve their listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and editing. Topics include listening and speaking strategies for a variety of academic and nonacademic settings, reading strategies for both fiction and non-fiction, grammar points, vocabulary acquisition, and writing/editing strategies that focus on various rhetorical patterns at the essay level as well as summarizing and paraphrasing skills.

Certificates are listed as hours rather than college credit (units). Students must pass and complete the minimum number of hours required.

Upon successful completion of this program a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate academic English language skills in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening and successfully progress toward higher transfer level coursework and career programs.
  • Produce multi-paragraph academic essays, read and demonstrate an understanding of a novel at native-speaker levels, and present speeches on academic topics with near-native accuracy and fluency.
