Academic ESL: High-Beginning Level

Certificate of Competency

This program provides instruction in English that focuses on helping ESL students to improve their listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary, writing, and grammar skills. Topics include high-beginning listening and speaking strategies for a variety of settings, reading strategies for both fiction and non-fiction, basic grammar points, and writing strategies that focus on simple and compound sentences.

Certificates are listed as hours rather than college credit (units). Students must pass and complete the minimum number of hours required.

Upon successful completion of this program a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate academic English language skills in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening and successfully progress toward intermediate level ESL coursework.
  • Produce compound and complex sentences, read and demonstrate an understanding of 200-400 word articles at high beginning levels, and create and role-play situational dialogs with level-appropriate accuracy and fluency.
