Academic ESL: Intermediate Level

Certificate of Competency

This program provides instruction in English that focuses on helping ESL students improve their listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and editing. Topics include listening and speaking strategies for a variety of academic and nonacademic settings, reading strategies for both fiction and non-fiction, grammar points, vocabulary acquisition, and writing/editing strategies that focus on various rhetorical patterns at the sentence and paragraph level.

Certificates are listed as hours rather than college credit (units). Students must pass and complete the minimum number of hours required.

Upon successful completion of this program a student will be able to:

  • Produce academic paragraphs, read and demonstrate an understanding of 600-900 word articles at intermediate levels, and give oral presentations on academic topics with level-appropriate accuracy and fluency.
  • Demonstrate academic English language skills in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening and successfully progress toward advanced level ESL coursework.
