Communication Studies 2.0

Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer

The Associate in Arts in Communication Studies 2.0 for Transfer degree (AA‐T in Communication Studies 2.0) is a 60-unit program which provides students with the lower division coursework required for seamless transfer to a CSU institution for the major in Communications Studies. The program offers students the opportunity to apply theories, concepts, and practical techniques to build the confidence necessary to elevate their voices and create more meaningful personal, academic, and professional relationships. The curriculum is applicable to students' everyday lives and is offered in welcoming and inclusive learning environments. The goals of the program are to encourage students to discover how to listen intentionally, think critically, and speak passionately. To earn the Communication Studies 2.0 AA-T, students must complete the following requirements: 1. 60 semester or 90 quarter CSU-transferable units; 2. The California State University- General Education‐Breadth pattern (CSU GE- Breadth); OR the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) pattern; 3. A minimum of 18 semester or 27 quarter units in the major or area of emphasis as determined by the community college district; 4. Obtainment of a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0; 5. Earn a grade of C or P or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.

Upon successful completion of this program a student will be able to:

  • Identify and explain concepts, perspectives, methodologies, and theories of human communication.
  • Demonstrate a theoretical and practical understanding of ethical and effective verbal and nonverbal communication.
  • Increase communication competency in both personal and professional contexts.
  • Analyze and explain how communication effects and creates cultural, gender, ethnic, and racial identities in self and others, specifically, within social, personal, professional, and cultural realities.
  • Research, construct, interpret, and implement messages across multiple channels to inform, persuade, negotiate, and engage a diverse audience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to understand and apply the various theoretical and pragmatic skills necessary to navigate social interactions within interpersonal, small group, public, intercultural, workplace, and debate contexts.
  • Identify and analyze how social and cultural norms and values influence the human communicative process.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills in a variety of personal and professional settings.
