English for Citizenship

Certificate of Competency

This program provides instruction in English at a low-intermediate level. It is designed to help prepare the second language learners of English to successfully complete the United States Citizenship examination. The focus of the program is on communicative English skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, as well as reinforcing the key points of U.S. history, government, and constitution. Topics include concepts related to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) 100 civics study questions, the N400 Application form, and interview techniques and interactions to understand and complete the final USCIS interview process for the purpose of obtaining U.S. citizenship.

Certificates are listed as hours rather than college credit (units). Students must pass and complete the minimum number of hours required.

Upon successful completion of this program a student will be able to:

  • Respond orally and accurately to questions related to personal history, and general questions related to history, geography, culture, and governmental structure of the United States.
  • Respond accurately in writing to all the questions on the Application for Naturalization form N400, and verbally to all the 100 questions for citizenship, published by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
