West Valley College - Main Stage Theater

    April 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 at 8:00pm

    April 21 & 28 at 2:00pm

Violet , the musical, has music by Jeanine Tesori and libretto by Brian Crawley. Based on the short story "The Ugliest Pilgrim" by Doris Betts, a young woman whose face is disfigured in an accident involving an axe when she was a girl, decides to journey by bus from North Carolina to Oklahoma to be healed by an evangelist she had seen on television. We meet a cross section of America’s people and southern culture in 1964 as she travels to seek healing. And we hear a cross-section of music from country to gospel to the blues as we learn along with Violet that physical healing is much less important than what a soul and heart experience.

Tesori is known for being awarded a recent Tony for her music for Kimberly Akimbo on Broadway, as well as earlier awards for Shrek the Musical, Fun Home, and Caroline or Change, plus accomplishing film work on Shrek the Third, Mulan II, and others.

  54. MMIW+ | Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

    West Valley Logo

MMIW+ (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) occurred on Tuesday May 2, 2023. West Valley College collaborated with the Muwekma Tribe, Indian Health Center of Santa Clara County, and Mosaic for our annual MMIW+ Event. At this event Muwekma provided a land acknowledgment, the Santa Clara Indian Health Center performed a blessing and there were traditional Native dancers and performers. Mosaic provided a multimedia presentation on the history of Muwekma, students completed various native art projects, including putting their own red handprint on the event banner.

MMIW+ is a movement that advocates for the end of violence against Native women and Two Spirit individuals. The red handprint and/or red hand over the mouth symbolizes missing relatives whose voices have been silenced and the lack of visibility within media and law enforcement. Please see here (https://indianhealthcenter.org/about/ihc-mmiw-awareness/) for more information.
