- Friday WOWs (WVC Online Workshops)
- @ONE webinars and courses
Did you hear the news that West Valley College has been POCR Certified? What this means is that WVC has shown it understands the high-quality standards for online course design and instruction set out by the CVC Course Design Rubric.
Many thanks to the 2021-2022 POCR faculty who helped make this happen: Syl Arena, Jess Lerma, Laura Plunkett, Serkuang Chen, Andy Cardamone, and Tejal Naik.
This year, we have a second cohort 2022-2023 POCR faculty who are pushing the POCR program forward with three more courses: Eva Maddox, Jamilya Ukudeeva, Tracy DeHaan, Gina Firenzi, and Jeanette Richey.
The POCR Academy is in response to many WVC faculty who have inquired about another course to build upon what they learned in the WVC Online Academy about online pedagogy and best practices. The POCR Academy can help faculty prepare their courses if they want to apply to the year-long POCR process of completely (100%!) aligning an online asynchronous course to the CVC Course Design Rubric and earning a Quality Reviewed badge for the course.
The POCR Academy consists of three 2-hour interactive online synchronous workshops that will review the four components of the CVC Course Design Rubric: Content Presentation, Interaction, Assessment and Accessibility. In the workshops, faculty will be presented with the elements of each component, approaches for analyzing online course design and content, and examples of what these approaches can look like when applied.
Faculty will have opportunities to practice applying some (not all) Rubric elements to make changes in their own courses, and they will be able to share their work with others (for ex., use of rubrics for an assignment). These opportunities will be available both during the workshops and in our shared WVC POCR Academy Canvas course shell.
Accessible syllabi for all courses at WVC, regardless of the modality of instruction, will be published within the course shell of the College’s learning management system (LMS). The syllabus can be posted within the course in a variety of formats including, but not limited to:
- As a page within the LMS (for ex., a Canvas course page)
- Use of a syllabus tool within the LMS (for ex., Canvas syllabus)
- A file uploaded into the course shell (for ex., a Word doc or pdf file)
- A link to a webpage or website posted within the course shell (for ex., link to a Google page)
Access to class and instructor information and dates for exams and projects is an important factor in reducing student stress and improving student retention, regardless of the course’s modality of instruction. Since this information is included in our course syllabi (if not, it should be!), providing students with access to syllabi throughout the semester is essential and posting the syllabus in a Canvas course shell is easy and only takes minutes.

Do you need training to satisfy the requirement to teach online/hybrid? Per the WVMFT faculty contract, faculty scheduled to teach an online or hybrid course must either have:
- taught an online or hybrid course within the District prior to Spring 2015, or
- received approval from Office of Instruction. The Faculty Request for Approval to Teach Online/Hybrid form (along with documentation) is to be submitted in a single pdf file to wvc.onlineFREEWEST_VALLEY
Faculty teaching online (synchronous and asynchronous), hybrid or hyflex must have fulfilled the course requirement outlined in Article 51.

We are excited to start the Spring 2023 series of Friday WOWs (WVC Online Workshops), our one-hour workshops on online best practices and strategies, accessibility, Canvas tools and apps that can enhance student engagement, retention and success in your class.
While the topics for the workshops are being developed, be sure to hold the following days in your calendar:
