The WVC English Department

English Department Courses

The WVC English Department offers developmental (college-preparatory) and transfer Composition courses. Students take an English or ESL Placement Test; the result determines placement in either a developmental or transfer Composition course. English 1A is required for graduation (AA/AS degree, General Education) and for transfer. English 1B and 1C satisfy many graduation and transfer requirements.

The Department also offers courses in Creative Writing, literature and film, and surveys of British, American, World, Children's and contemporary American multicultural literatures, as well as Shakespeare, the Bible, Classical Mythology, Poetry and Modern Fiction. Courses are offered in the face-to-face and online modes.

Student Learning Outcomes

After completing courses or an A.A. degree in English, a student will be able to:

  • Write focused, organized, well-developed essays that support clear thesis statements and demonstrate competence in standard English grammar and usage;

  • Analyze and evaluate academic essays and literature;

  • Formulate and communicate in writing positions on diverse issues;

  • Write research papers that demonstrate the effective evaluation, integration and MLA documentation of sources.
